hey gotham

You've been gone a few days now, but I feel like you were just here jumping up on my lap and smiling up at me. I keep expecting you to walk out of the bedroom and clamor for some food and then lay down on your back for a while. It's been a rough time for me but I am glad you are at peace. I wish we'd gotten more time. But you were with me for 10 years, through a whole lot. From when I had first lived alone through job changes and people entering and leaving my life, you were always there. Whenever I was feeling low you were around to give me comfort. I'm sorry I didn't do more for you in the end, I hope you'll forgive me.

Your sister has been a little confused. The other day she kept sniffing around everywhere to try and find you. But I think she'll manage. She's been keeping a stellar watch around the place. I know you two often had a contentious relationship but I know you liked her deep down. It's been so surreal not having you here. Whenever I go into the bathroom I have to remind myself that you won't be following me and jumping in the tub for me to turn the faucet on for you.

But on the bright side you don't have to hide from thunderstorms and the mean old vacuum anymore. I'll miss how you'd keep my seat warm if I went outside for a while and your various grunts and meows and that pathetic stare you'd give me when I was late giving you supper. The way you'd pet my chin. How you'd wait for permission before jumping on my lap. Your whiskers and your pretty eyes. I'll even miss the way you'd hiss at me and your sister sometimes because she smelled like the vet, even though you didn't mean it.

You were a good boy. Very sweet and polite and you had a lot of love to give. It's a shame you weren't able to share it with more people. From the moment you walked onto that walking trail and eventually found yourself in a strange new place that became your home, you were my good buddy Gotham. My Goofer, Meesar Goffam, Gojo, Goblin, Bubs, Dude. I missed you the moment you finally drifted off to sleep, and I always will.
